This book has emerged from encounters with Manon de Boer’s film trilogy Sylvia Kristel – Paris (2003), Resonating Surfaces (2005) and Think about Wood, Think about Metal (2011). In the first film, the actress Sylvia Kristel tells her story in two takes made a year apart. The second film is a portrait of the psychoanalyst Suely Rolnik and in the last film of the series we meet the percussionist Robyn Schulkowsky. These three films constitute a transition from questions of filmic narration and the impossibility of the narrative, in Sylvia Kristel – Paris, via the power of the voice and its connection to identity and body, in Resonating Surfaces, to the sound in itself and the silence as its prerequisite in Think about Wood, Think about Metal.
