John McCracken

John McCracken (°1934) lives and works in Santa Fe, New Mexico. His work may be defined as West Coast Minimal Art. The catalogue is bilingual (Dutch/English). My design concerns the interior pages. The cover of the book is conform with the house style of the museum, designed by Base (Brussels). In fact, I think the house style isn’t appropriate for book covers: not only the name of the museum (logo) but also the name of the artist (= title) has to appear in the house style. This way, the artists and the books are incorporated in the promotional campaign of the museum. This means that the artist and the art are subordinate to the museum. Using the dominant house style for the cover of a book means that the specific quality of the book in relation with the artwork is ignored. That’s the reason why I don’t show the cover of this book. John McCracken deserved better.
