Red and Green and Blue More or Less. Works and documents of Lawrence Weiner

Statements of Lawrence Weiner in the exhibition

For the exhibition ‘Red and Green and Blue More or Less. Works and documents of Lawrence Weiner’ (27/10/25–28/06/26), the Herbert Foundation selected 12 statements by Lawrence Weiner. These works had previously been shown over several decades. Michaël Bussaer and I believed it was important to create a new coherent entity for this new exhibition, with the additional important aspect that Lawrence Weiner was not involved, given his death on 2 December 2021. We wanted to avoid imitating his work and returned to the format of his exhibitions in the 1970s, in which the text was set in a single font and size. In this sense, we also returned to the period when Anton and Annick Herbert began collecting the work. For this exhibition, we chose Franklin Gothic Extra Condensed, a font that he used for several decades. Within the constraints of one font and one size, we nevertheless worked with specific characteristics in the text that Lawrence Weiner had already emphasised in a different way in previous presentations of the work. This resulted in a new approach to the text based on the specific space of the Herbert Foundation.
